Time at IMS MAXIMS: 38 years

Q. How has your role evolved over the years, and what’s kept you motivated?

I am privileged to have worked with our Patient Administration System since its initial development. It’s been very rewarding to see the application develop from an initial design to become a critical application used in hospitals.

Initially, I worked as a Software Engineer on site developing a health care application. I now manage our Irish PAS customer sites. Working closely with our customers over the years has been incredibly fulfilling, their feedback and insights have not only helped shape the system but have also continuously motivated me.

Q. Looking back on your 38 years working at IMS MAXIMS, what are some of the accomplishments you're most proud of?

Playing a key role in designing and developing core modules of the Patient Administration System, ensuring they were effective and user-friendly. Writing business proposals for change requests and new releases, driving system growth. Expanding the system’s functionality and overseeing its installation on site with the team. I also designed and implemented a solution for the Y2K challenges, ensuring system stability during the transition. Additionally, managing the development of new releases, specifying requirements and overseeing improvements to enhance system capabilities.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek guidance. There is a wealth of knowledge within the company.

Q. How has your role evolved over the years, and what’s kept you motivated along the way?

I started as a programmer with responsibilities in support as well, I moved more into customer support and found what I wanted to do. I truly enjoy working with our customers and have a passion for problem solving. That lead me to project management where I found my home, working with the IMS MAXIMS team overcoming challenges that lead to delivering real solutions.

It’s the combination that’s perfect for me! I’m addicted to go-lives and they have become something I look forward to.

Q. Can you share a standout memory or achievement from your time with IMS MAXIMS?

Every go-live since I have been in the company regardless of my role, there’s nothing better! 🚀 Apart from maybe the company Christmas parties which are legendary!

Q. What’s one thing you enjoy about working here?

The people – IMS MAXIMS has a large group of very experienced people, experts in their field and I don’t believe there is a healthcare software issue that the team hasn’t solved or can’t solve.

The work – every day brings new challenges and experiences. You are trusted to deliver, and it drives you to want to do more.

Q. What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in a role similar to yours?

  • Every moment is an opportunity to learn something.

  • Don’t leave a meeting or conversation not understanding something, even if you must investigate afterwards.

  • Follow a code of ethics – Good examples are available through the Project Management Institute or online.

  • Never take credit for your team’s work. The credit always belongs with the team not you as an individual.

  • If your team is working, you should be working – always be available for people working with you or on your behalf.

Q. How has working here contributed to your growth, both professionally & personally?

I’ve worked in several roles over the years, from front end development / report writing and resolving software issues. Currently I have a very customer facing role which I enjoy, whilst also being able to utilise skills from previous roles to do my daily job.

Flexible working hours has allowed me to devote as much time as possible for family, after all they come first. I’ve been able to coach both my son (soccer) and daughters (ladies Gaelic football) teams and now help my youngest in her Triathlon training.

Q. Can you share a standout memory or achievement from your time with IMS MAXIMS?

The first deployment of IMS MAXIMS software for our first major customer. Prior to this, the company was very focused on Research and Development with European Projects like EDITH.

Q. What’s one thing you enjoy about working here?

The variety of the work. Directly helping customers with issues, report development and training. The problem solving required and the people I work with.

Yes, that’s more than one thing, I know!

Q. What are some of the lessons you’ve learned throughout your career that you’d like to share with others?

Be patient, nobody is perfect. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, we are all human, learn from them though. Help others when asked, offer to help even if not asked.
